Google began testing AI Mode in Labs in March 2025 and opened it to everyone in the United States that May. Since then it has spread to a large number of countries and languages, and Google has been bringing it closer to AI Overviews, so a quick answer on the results page can lead into a longer conversation. Availability and features change quickly, so check Google’s own help pages for the current list.
- AI Mode is for longer, more exploratory questions, with follow-ups.
- It breaks a question into several related searches, so broad topic coverage helps.
- There’s no special markup for it. Strong SEO basics are what count.
What AI Mode Does
- Handles long, multi-part questions. You can ask for a comparison or a plan in plain language rather than breaking it into keywords.
- Supports follow-ups. Each answer can lead to the next question, like a conversation.
- Accepts more than text. You can use voice or images as well as typed questions.
- Shows its sources. The answer includes links to the web pages it drew from.
AI Mode vs AI Overviews
The two are often confused, but they work differently.
- AI Overviews appear automatically on regular results when Google thinks a summary will help. They’re short, and mostly a one-shot answer.
- AI Mode is something a person chooses to use. It’s built for deeper questions and back-and-forth.
- Both cite sources, and both rely on Google’s index of web pages.
How AI Mode Finds Answers
Google has described a technique it calls query fan-out. Instead of running one search, the system splits a question into several related sub-questions, searches for each, and combines what it finds. For example, a question about the best laptop for video editing might trigger separate searches about processors, screens, battery life, and price.
For you, this means a page can get cited for a sub-topic it covers well, even if it wouldn’t rank first for the original question. Covering a topic in depth, with clear sections, gives you more chances to be picked up.
What AI Mode Means for SEO
- Visibility is shifting. Some searches may end inside the AI answer, so a citation can matter as much as a ranking.
- Clicks may change. Some sites report fewer clicks on informational queries. Others see well-matched visits from people who clicked a cited source.
- Measurement is improving. Google has said AI Mode activity is included in the Search Console performance data, though it isn’t broken out separately. Check Search Console’s help documentation for the latest.
How to Prepare for AI Mode
- Stay indexed and snippet-eligible. A page that can’t be shown in Google Search can’t be cited.
- Cover topics fully. Answer the follow-up questions a reader would ask next.
- Use clear structure. Descriptive headings and short, direct answers are easy to quote.
- Show real expertise. Original examples, data, and named authors support E-E-A-T.
- Keep content current. Update facts, prices, and dates.
AI Mode FAQs
Is AI Mode the same as Google Search?
No. It’s an additional mode inside Search. Regular results and AI Overviews still exist, and Google has been connecting them more closely.
Do I need special markup to appear in AI Mode?
No. Google has said there are no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Helpful, well-structured content is the focus.
Can I opt out of AI Mode?
You can limit how your content appears using the same controls you use for snippets, such as nosnippet or noindex, but these also affect your regular search results, so use them with care.
